I know I'll probably miss some important stuff, but here's my summary of what happened on the Australian Open!
- Jelena Jankovic had a tough time against Kirsten Flipkens, who hit 30 winners to 38 UE: which is a pretty good ratio. Still, the world #1 prevailed in straight sets. She had a couple of problems with her shoes.... apparently her socks were getting slippery from all the sweat. Perhaps her new Chinese-brand apparel isn't holding up too well??
- Jelena Dokic def 17th seed Anna Chakvetadze 6-4, 6-7, 6-3 to advance to the third round where she will meet Caroline Wozniacki. This was an unbelievable match: full of drama and tension from both players. Jelena played some amazing shots, but also hit plenty of UE along the way. I was on the verge of tears during her on court interview after the match.... It's great to have you back Jelena!
- 11th seed David Nalbandian was knocked out by Yen-Hsun Lu in five sets. This was quite unexpected, I didn't see the match so can't really comment on it. Lu faces Robredo in the third round.
- Unseeded Marcos Baghdatis took out the number 16 seed Robin Soderling. Unforced errors were the story of the match. Baggy meets Mardy Fish in the third round.
Before I continue, just thought I'd add this quote by Vika from the AO feature story "10 minutes with Viktoria Azarenka."
Q: What was the last song you bought or downloaded?
Victoria Azarenka: Britney Spears – Circus
Love you Vika!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! PS. I love that song toooooo.... Now, back to the tennis :)
- Fabrice Santoro (pictured left) looked strangely alien as he tried to cool down during his match against the #32 seed Phillip Kohlschreiber. Santoro eventually took the match in 4 sets!
- Caroline Wozniacki's fans dressed up for her match against Viginia Ruano Pascal. The only costume I'm feeling is the J-J-J-Joker Face, J-J-Joker Face. Not quite sure what the guy in fluoro yellow speedos was trying to achieve lol.
